Culture, Customs, and Muslim Patient Presentation
By Awadh Binhazim (abinhazim@mmc.edu)
Nashville, April 17 2008 - About 150 participants from Vanderbilt that included medical students, physicians, nurses, social workers, and others attended a presentation entitled "Culture, Customs, and the Muslim Patient" on April 17 at 12 noon in 208 Light Hall.
The speakers were Awadh A. Binhazim, professor of pathology, Meharry Medical College and Ayman Al-Hendy, professor and vice chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Meharry Medical College and gynecologist/obstetrician at Nashville General Hospital. Sister Ajibiya served as the Muslim sister on the panel.
The presentation was geared towards educating health care providers on the proper approaches to a Muslim patient. Dr. Binhazim talked about Islam and the Muslim beliefs as it relates to Medicine. Dr. Al-Hendy discussed about his experiences as a Muslim physician. Sister Ajibiya Charif provided insight of personal experiences in the hospital setting when she was a patient.
Making health care providers aware of the diverse customs and cultures of their patients has become increasingly important. We commend Dr. George Hill, Associate Dean for Diversity in Medical Education for coming up with this excellent idea and for providing Olive Tree Education with the opportunity to assist in this event. The presentation will be available at our website by this weekend and you can listen to the audio as well.
